11:07 am - Carl Sagan Cosmos remix
|
for those of us uber-geeks who haven't seen it yet, this is way awesome:
nothing like a Carl Sagan remix with Stephen Hawking doing a break-down. autotune => cosmological win.

this has been a fairly decently packed weekend. the internet has proven itself again to be my bloody hero, since it will have single-handedly fixed my dryer. who needs a dodgy, greasy, eye-bepatched repairman when the internet swings in on a roll of dryer sheets to save the day? i've taken the dang thing apart (the dryer, not the internet), identified the problematic parts (thanks to the newly purchased ohmmeter) and have ordered the parts from the interwebs for quite a bit less than Eye-patch told me it would cost. (all of you about to tell me what a fool i am *eyes novembersnow * i made sure that all parts are returnable before purchasing them.) srsly, though, it can't be that hard (knocks frantically on nearby wooden end-table). if Eye-patch can do it, i'm fairly certain i'll be able to figure it out. apparently, dryer technology hasn't changed since WWII.
anyhoo, after much dryer-fixing shenanigans, M and i went to my favorite Indian restaurant in the Portland metro area and then to the site of a middle school in the process of getting demolished, so i could take pictures of the heart-tugging beautifulness of it. a crow even POSED for me for the first few shots. :-D how lucky am i? anyway, i decided to call the series 'Declension' for the double meaning: (1) grammatical forms of a noun, pronoun, or adjective, by which its case, number, and gender are identified, and (2) a condition of decline or moral deterioration.
( for your viewing pleasure )
after that, we went to see Whip It! (the new Drew Barrymore/Ellen Page movie) with a bunch of friends, which was pretty good, if a teeny bit slow at times. the best part was the post-movie discussion in the bakery section of the local New Seasons of what all our derby names would be. mine: Sister Mary Terror. others listed: Red Hot Doom, Sandy Day O'Clubber, Bloody Merri, Kris Myass, and Mandy Mayhem, among others. ;-)
today, M and i loaded up the dog and drove to nearby Lake Oswego for the annual Buddy Walk to benefit people with Down syndrome. the dog was a HUGE hit in her snow-dog fur and hot-pink t-shirt (pics to come later). even Miss University of Oregon wanted to take her picture. needless to say the kids were ALL OVER her (the dog, not Miss U of O, though maybe they were all over her, too--didn't see it if they were), but she was a very good girl (again, talking about the dog here) and behaved beautifully despite the heat, the crowd, the undignified t-shirt modeling, the waiting for the walking, and then the having to walk BEHIND OTHER DOGS OMG. so she totally got to stop at PetSmart on the way home and pick out a treat.
now i'm taking a well needed break before dinner, finishing up a delicious Merlin fic. great weekend overall. :-)

Just had a repairman over to figure out what's wrong with our dryer. Apparently, the timer's bad and it's not worth the money it would take to fix it. On the one hand, new dryer! On the other, *sigh* new dryer. I guess I'll be trolling craigslist this weekend for a suitable replacement. It would be great if I could find one that matched... :-(

Argh. Was happily posting via my new mobile LJ app when I hit the back button by accident. Clearly am not as adept as the younger gen. *sigh*
Anyhoo, the app looks to be working pretty well. Here's to hoping!

9:59 pm - another successful (if non-productive) write night
|
|
My writing crew just left. <333 I love having RL as well as online writing groups. Nothing more fun than sitting around chatting about writing. This week's assignment was to write the back-flap copy of our current novel projects. EV wrote a stellar example, which had us rolling around on the floor laughing. My favorite line: "Even squandering your potential is hard when you're caught unprepared in the middle of a mystery." He also made up some author quotes. This one being the best: “I will never look at a Mongolian restaurant the same way again.” Ernest Hemingway, author of The Sun Also Rises and a real asshole (Which is funnier if you know that the first chapter of his novel is his protagonist blaming Hemingway for being tied up in a basement.)
Anyway, I just love my group. They're okay with the procrastination when I need it, and okay with the cracking down and getting work done when I can't stand it anymore and I just have to WRITE. Plus, they know exactly how I like my feedback. :-) In other words, I feed them lasagna, and they give me back love. :-)
In other news, I have been wholly and completely converted to Merlinism. Somebody send down the spaceship--I'm ready for my coolaid now.

I just finished reading Hunger Games and I'm far too keyed-up to sleep. Argh. I've made myself some chamomile/borage tea that I'm praying has some calming affect on my brain. Till then I guess I'll surf the net and wait for weariness to set in. My hopes are not high that this will be happening in the near future. *sigh* Guess it's a good time to write as well. :-)

8:33 am - good deeds and conversations
|
Hallelujah, thank you mid-month pay-check! it's so nice to see the coffers in the positive once again. even if it is for a limited time, alas. but i have already put the money to good use. i just donated to my friend's Team-in-Training run (which I've been meaning to do for months now). it's a great cause, and she still has quite a bit to raise in a very little amount of time. i'm trying to help her as much as possible, so i thought i'd post the link to her donation site on my journal just in the off-chance some of you fabulous people might have an extra shekel or two in your mid-month pay-check that you could send her way. Link to good-karma enhancement for the day
in other news, i spent another fabulous afternoon with snottygrrl yesterday, talking about everything from healthcare to the cracky merits of the GI Joe movie. time just flew by, and before i knew it, we'd spent nearly three hours just chatting away. i love days like that. :-D
i also talked to my brother yesterday. he cracks me up.
ME: Whatcha doing? Bro: Getting ready to go to a Ravens/Redskins game. ME: Oh. ... Is that basketball? Bro: .... You make me tired.
hahahaha. what can i say? sports = not my thing. ah, well.

10:03 pm - Willamette Writers Conference
|
I spent all day Friday and dinner tonight at the Willamette Writer's Conference. Totally. Worth. The Money. It was such a good mix of people, such fabulous presentations, and I feel all sorts of inspired now. I just need to remember how this feels for the next 365 days. I met a ton of awesome writers, and I feel like I squeezed every little drop out of the one day I attended. I even got to participate in a small-group session with a YA agent. :-DDD She was very accessible and knowledgeable. I liked her a lot. And I asked a lot of questions, which is highly unusual for me. I took tons of notes and have lots of new ideas on how to improve my writing and my chances getting published. Woot! It's been a great weekend. Ugh--I'm going to SO hate having to go back to work on Monday...

(Goddess Cat told me to, so I did. also, i just have to see Jeanine's boobs IRL *drools more*) i loved last season, but if it's possible, i might love this season even more. *hearts*

i actually went outside today and didn't want to kill myself!! WIN! i can't believe i'm happy that it's 95 degrees, but everything's relative, i suppose. i just had a lovely coffee date with snottygrrl who has graciously agreed to let me escort her to coffee in another week. we talked about everything from nepotism in the workplace to SYTYCD and it was fabulous. :-DDD i love having fandom friends close by.
so tonight's plans are all about cooking dinner (outside--no more heat inside for at least a month) and watching Watchmen. M and i haven't seen it yet, and though we've heard mixed reviews, we figure it's worth an On-Demand rental. other than that, and maybe a glass of wine or two, it's kick back, relax, and let the Friday wash over us. ahhhh...

it is too hot to live. i actually taped tin foil over the windows this morning. tin foil. i thought people only did that in Alaska. also, i went to Target last night to try and get a kiddie pool for my poor dog who is having a year shaved off her life for every day we break 100-degrees. but when i asked the sales person if they had any, she gave me this super-annoyed look and said (with quelling hand gestures and everything), "No. We are out of everything." i kinda wanted to smack her and laugh at the same time. of course they're out of everything. it's just like the great snow-chains shortage of 2008. apparently, Portland is incapable of preparing for extreme weather conditions. so, i've settled for hosing down the dog every couple of hours (though she hates it), wrapping the cat in towels drenched in cold water, and taping tin foil over the windows. *sigh*
in other news, my friend J went to Comic Con this year and got me the best thing EVAR: the Comic Con Superhero/Supervillain My Little Pony! :-DDD WIN!!! Apparently, she stood in line 20 minutes just to get it for me. Clearly I have the best friends in the universe! squee!
( See pics )
nothing says love like multiple-personality-disorder children's toys. thanks J! the only question now is should i open it and snuggle it up and play with and stuff? or should i keep it pristine in its packaging? a decision of which i am not capable in this overwhelming sauna i have somehow stumbled into...

4:53 pm - Good God
|
It's hotter than Hades on a heating binge. Why can't PGE collect it and save it for winter when we need it? *SIGH* My house is like a thousand degrees and I can't get my dog to get in the damn car so we can go for an extended drive in the luscious air-conditioning. Grr. At least I had the foresight to put a comforter up over the sliding glass door this morning to keep a majority of the malicious sun out of the living room. Very soon, now, I'm going to have to break down and shell out the cash for central AC. Thanks global warming. Thanks.

...that my partner M TOTALLY ROCKS!!! while i was at azkatraz, she and her parents overhauled our bathroom, replacing the faucets and towel bars with ones i've been wanting for ages. they also painted the bathroom as well as the guest room, and installed a beautiful new ceiling fan. :-DDD just goes to show i should go to HP cons more often.

apparently, M has gotten it into her head that on our upcoming trip to WY we will be roughing it (or slumming it, as the case may be) by staying in a Super 8 motel in Boise along the way. i wanted to stay in a theme inn complete with jetted tubs and monster-sized tv's in every room. i guess she's more interested in cockroaches than romance. needless to say, she will be the first in the car if there is no (as i suspect) wireless internet. still. >:-( i am most seriously displeased.

8:38 pm - procrastinating...
|
seems like it would be hard to procrastinate something when you're unemployed and not necessarily needing to do anything worth procrastinating, but there it is. old habits, ya know?
i'm supposed to be working on this business plan thing for my new freelance technical writing/editing business. it isn't hard, and i'm about half-way through it, but now i'm at the hard half (hence the procrastinating). M is studying for the bar until 10, so i've got some time to kill. i think i may check out the Breakfast Club slash that novembersnow recced to me. (and speaking of the lovely November, she wrote a fabulous and expansive travelogue of her trip to visit us last week. loved it!)
well, i'm off to read fic. :-)

6:10 pm - november's visit...
|
...was SO AWESOME. she is the best house guest EVAR. we had a ton of fun--going to wineries, meeting cool local fandom peeps, and eating LOTS of yummy treats. i got all choked up at the airport when she had to leave. :-( but it really was a fabulous time. it's been a while since i've had so much fun! and thanks a whole lot to ashkitty, moonlight69, and florahart for meeting up with us during her visit. it was great meeting all of you, and i can't wait to see you at the various upcoming HP festivities, if not before. you all totally rock!
highlights from the trip: ~meeting the elusive and awe-inspiring florahart ~having honeybush tea and sweet life treats with ashkitty and moonlight69 ~hanging with my honey justice_rain ~finding the jewel of a vineyard the Secret House Winery ~introducing novembersnow to the cinematic hilarity that is Saved! ~mutually groaning over the unnecessarily lengthy cinematic pointlessness that is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil ~driving up the 101 and sharing sea-lion vistas with picturesque lighthouses in the distance ~discussing in depth the positive impact that fandom has had on our writing technique ~gossiping about old lovers ~taking and sharing all sorts of pictures, both flattering and, well, not-as-flattering ~getting burnt to a crisp while eating lunch on a hill-top veranda under the june sun ~reconnecting with a long-time kindred spirit
thanks so much, L, for coming to visit. i miss you already!

11:06 pm - car breakage *le sigh*
|
looks like this is the week of ask-my-friendslist-for-advice posts. sorry for not posting something more interesting!
my partner's car just broke down on the side of the road today. the mechanic says the timing belt broke and her engine is an interference engine, which essentially means that to fix it would be about $1500. has anyone else had this problem, and if so, is $1500 a reasonable cost for fixing it?
in other news, novembersnow will be here in TWO DAYS. OMG so much cleaning!!!!!
also, my partner M has some sort of mysterious surprise for me that will not be ready for TWO WEEKS, but she will not tell me what it is. !!!! she is v.v.v.v. sweet, but i am totally dying to know what it is. i may have to resort to tickling.
